Assumed office 1874 | |
| Preceded by | James D. Fay |
| Party | Democrat |
Early Life
Robert Bevins Cochran was born on March 4th, 1820, in Howard County, Missouri. In 1845, he crossed the plains to Oregon with his wife and parents, settling near present-day Coburg in Lane County. Cochran claimed a donation land grant and devoted more than thirty years to farming in the region.[1]
Public Service
Although primarily a farmer, Cochran began his public service in 1856 with election to the Oregon Territorial Legislature. He subsequently served in the State Legislature in 1858 and 1860. Following an unsuccessful campaign for the State Senate in 1862, he returned to legislative office in 1866, and was later elected to the State Senate in 1868. Cochran was re-elected in 1874, and served as President of the Senate during that session, resigning shortly before adjournment due to the death of a child. In 1878, Cochran was again elected to the Senate, defeating B. J. Pengra, and served until succeeded by John Whiteaker.[2]
Death
After nearly twenty-eight years of continuous legislative service in Oregon, Cochran decided not to run for another term. In 1879, he retired from public life and moved to Eugene City, where he established his residence.
