Early life and family background

The Oberth family has a documented history in the trade of fine goods and rarities dating to 1853.[5] Robert Oberth is a Gemological Institute of America (GIA)-certified diamond graduate and a life member of the American Numismatic Association.[5]

Career

Gold & Coin Exchange

In 2006, Oberth founded Gold & Coin Exchange in Marietta, Georgia, a dealership specializing in rare coins, precious metals, diamonds, and fine jewelry.[6] The business has been featured by Atlanta-area media outlets including 11Alive, WSB-TV, Fox 5 Atlanta, and consumer advocate Clark Howard.[7] Gold & Coin Exchange holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been accredited since 2010.[6]

Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers and RoundTable Trading

In January 2017, Oberth founded Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers (CDHCD), a Facebook-based group designed to provide professional numismatists with a private forum for real-time communication and trading.[8] The platform requires that all members demonstrate professional dealer credentials and are individually vetted before admission.[9] The group grew rapidly and evolved into RoundTable Trading, which expanded to include auction services, wholesale trading networks, and retail-facing groups such as the Virtual Coin Show on Facebook.[9]

In 2023, Oberth launched RoundTable Auctions as a dedicated auction platform for precious metals, jewelry, and rare coins.[10]

Great American Coin Hunt

In 2019, Oberth co-organized the first Great American Coin Hunt (GACH), a grassroots campaign timed to coincide with the ANA's annual National Coin Week.[1] The event encouraged hundreds of coin dealers and thousands of collectors to release over one million collectible and vintage coins back into general circulation, with the goal of inspiring new interest in numismatics, particularly among younger people.[11] Participating dealers spent coins dating as far back as the 19th century—including Indian Head cents, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, and silver quarters—as ordinary change at restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores.[1]

The program attracted national media coverage and participation from major numismatic organizations including NGC, PCGS, Littleton Coin Company, and the ANA.[12] The United States Mint coordinated with the event by releasing 2019-W America the Beautiful quarters—bearing the West Point mint mark—into general circulation for the first time in the Mint's history.[13]

The Great American Coin Hunt returned in 2020 with a modified social media-focused format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[14] A related holiday initiative, #Coins4Christmas and #FreeCoinDay, launched in December 2021, encouraging the direct distribution of rare and collectible coins to the public.[15]

American Numismatic Association

Oberth was first elected to the ANA Board of Governors in 2019.[2] During his tenure, he was appointed Chairman of the IT Committee, where he prioritized the development of virtual learning programs.[16] He played a central role in launching an online educational initiative called "The Graduate Numismatist Program," which attracted thousands of ANA members.[16] He also established the ANA's first officially approved Facebook group and facilitated a partnership between the ANA and eBay aimed at expanding consumer protections and hobby outreach.[16]

Using social media outreach, Oberth helped raise over $10,000 for ANA programs, with a significant portion directed toward youth numismatic education.[16] He ran for re-election to the Board of Governors in 2021.[16]

Oberth also serves as an instructor at the ANA Summer Seminar, teaching courses on advanced coin dealing alongside fellow PNG members.[3]
