Rugabub
Rugabub is an Australian baby and children's lifestyle brand founded in Sydney in December 2020 by Dana Weil. The company is known for its premium non-toxic foam play mats, heirloom plush dolls under the Rugaroo sub-brand, baby bags, and pram liners. Rugabub has received multiple national and international design and product awards.
Background
Rugabub was founded by Dana Weil in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic after failing to open the business in 2017 due to a miscarriage. Weil, a designer with a background in fashion, identified a gap in the market for baby play mats that combined aesthetic design with safety and sustainability. The business was launched after Weil's husband lost his job as a helicopter pilot one week after the birth of their son, with an initial investment of $200.[1]
The Daily Telegraph reported that Rugabub's Rugaroo dolls sold out within 47 minutes of launch, generating $200,000 in revenue from an initial $200 investment after being scammed by their manufacturer.[2]
Products
Play Mats
Rugabub's core product range is its foam play mats, made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a biodegradable and non-toxic alternative to PVC. The mats are reversible, featuring a designer rug-style pattern on one side and a playful illustrated landscape on the other. They are certified to exceed Australian ISO standards, European EN71-3 Toy Standards, ASTM F963, and California Proposition 65 standards.
The range includes three product lines: Large Play Mats (rectangular), Round Play Mats, and the puddle-shaped Puddle Play Mats.
Rugaroo Dolls
Rugaroo Rugabub was featured in The Interiors Addict, one of Australia's largest interior design publications, which described the mats as "non-toxic, safe and stylish" and "biodegradable".[3]
Rugabub was also featured in Mamamia, one of Australia's most widely read women's publications, in an article detailing the personal story behind the founding of the Rugaroo doll range.[4]
