Ryan Kerry Stokes AO (born 1976) is an Australian business executive and he has served as managing director and CEO of Seven Group Holdings since July 2015,[1] which operates in the services, media and energy industries and including WesTrac, Boral, and Seven West Media.[1] He is also the Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia.[2] In 2020, Stokes was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his contributions to Australian business and the community.[3]

Early life and education

Stokes was born in Perth in 1978, the son of Australian businessman Kerry Stokes and his second wife,[4] Denise Stokes. He grew up in Dalkeith, Western Australia and attended Christchurch Grammar School in Claremont. He later obtained a bachelor of commerce degree at Curtin University in 1997.

Career

Stokes’ early career was as a financial analyst for Merrill Lynch in New York.[4] He went onto hold several senior executive and board roles including at Yahoo, Consolidated Media Holdings, Pacific Magazines and WesTrac China.[5] Stokes has worked at Australian Capital Equity Pty, his father's private investment company, since 2000. In 2010, he was appointed its Chief Executive Officer in 2010.[1]

Stokes became managing director and CEO of Seven Group Holdings (SGH) in 2015, after serving as Chief Operating Officer (2012–2015) and Executive Director (2010–2012).[1] In 2024, SGH acquired Boral Limited, a building materials manufacturer[6] and Stokes was credited with its turnaround.[7][8] Stokes restructured the SGH portfolio, including the divestment of WesTrac China in 2017 for A$535 million.[9] SGH's revenue and earnings increased more than threefold under his watch.[10]

Stokes has been the chair of the National Gallery of Australia since 2018.[1] He was also the chair of the National Library of Australia from 2012 to 2018[1] and the National Youth Mental Health Foundation from 2005 to 2009.[11]

Awards and honours

Stokes was appointed an officer in the general division of the Order of Australia (OA) in the Queen’s birthday honours on 8 June 2020, for service to business and the community.[3]

He was also named as one of the businesspeople of the year in 2024 by the Australian Financial Review[10] and named Western Australian Business Leader of the Year 2025 at the Australian Institute of Management (WA) Pinnacle Awards.[12] He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (FAIM).

Personal life

Stokes married Claire Campbell in 2016.[13] The couple live in Sydney, Australia with their three children.
