History
The association was founded in 2010 and opened the first specialized counseling center in the Free State of Saxony in 2018 for girls and women affected by or at risk of female genital mutilation. [2]
In 2019, the SAIDA Kompetenzzentrum (SAIDA Competence Center) was established at St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig as a multidisciplinary point of contact for the medical and psychosocial care of these girls and women. [3]
Activities
Counseling and Prevention
SAIDA International provides counseling and awareness-raising services for girls and women in Germany. ZDFheute reports that the association regularly organizes training sessions for medical and educational professionals as well as for employees of public authorities throughout Germany. [4]
SAIDA International participates in child protection processes to prevent female genital mutilation. According to BRIGITTE, the association concludes protective agreements with families and works with youth welfare authorities to support legal measures that prevent girls from being taken abroad for the purpose of FGM. [5]
The association has also produced a series of informational videos for doctors and medical professionals on female genital mutilation, focusing on the care and protection of affected patients. [6]
In February 2026, the digital learning program ″Wissen schützt!″ (″Knowledge protects!″) was launched in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The e-learning program targets professionals and provides guidance on preventing female genital mutilation and supporting affected or at-risk girls within child protection frameworks. [7]
SAIDA International is a member of the INTEGRA network, a nationwide alliance of organizations working to end female genital mutilation in Germany. [8]
Medical and Psychosocial Care
The SAIDA Competence Center at Klinikum St. Georg Leipzig works in cooperation with the departments of Gynecology, Pediatrics, Urology and Plastic Surgery. It coordinates counseling, diagnostics and treatment options for girls and women affected by or at risk of female genital mutilation. [3]
Projects
The project ″SAIDA mobil – Prävention und Hilfen bei Genitalverstümmelung in Mitteldeutschland″ (SAIDA mobil – Prevention and Support for Female Genital Mutilation in Central Germany) carries out mobile, specialized protection and counseling structures in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. [9]
In addition to its work in Germany, SAIDA International is involved in projects in countries of the Global South, such as Burkina Faso and Uganda. These projects include awareness campaigns, community outreach, and educational programs. [10] [11]
Professional Events
The association organizes and participates in professional events addressing the prevention of female genital mutilation. These include interdisciplinary conferences held in Erfurt (2022) and Leipzig (2024), which focused on child protection, care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. [12] [13]
In February 2024, the association initiated the nationwide ″Forum FGM – Gemeinsam gegen Genitalverstümmelung″ (Forum FGM – Together Against Genital Mutilation) for the first time. The forum was established as a platform for professional exchange and networking among experts, media representatives and affected individuals. [14]
In May 2025, SAIDA International participated in the 18th German Child and Youth Welfare Congress in Leipzig, where it hosted a specialist forum on preventive child protection in the context of female genital mutilation. [15]
Awards
In 2022, SAIDA International received the Sächsischer Integrationspreis (Saxony Integration Award), a state award recognizing commitment to integration work and social participation. [2]
