STIHL Australia Pty Ltd is the Australian subsidiary of the German family-owned outdoor power equipment manufacturer, Andreas Stihl AG & Co. KG. Established in 1971 as the first STIHL subsidiary outside of Europe,[1] the company is headquartered in Knoxfield, Victoria, and distributes outdoor power tools — including chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, lawn mowers, and construction equipment — through a network of authorised independent dealers. In 2025, STIHL Australia launched an official dealer-linked online store, extending product access nationally.

  • Comment: No evidence of notability at all, and purely promotional. In fact, I highly doubt that a foreign subsidiary like this which acts only as a box-shifter can even be notable. But by all means, feel free to try to prove otherwise. DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:17, 16 December 2025 (UTC)

History

STIHL established its Australian subsidiary in 1971, making it the first STIHL Group subsidiary to be established outside of Europe.[1] The company is headquartered in Knoxfield, Victoria, with state offices in Queensland and Western Australia. The dealer network has grown to around 650 independently owned outlets across Australia.[1] In 2024, STIHL Australia was led by Larry Blamer as head of Australian operations.[1]

Operations

STIHL Australia is a wholly owned subsidiary of Andreas Stihl AG & Co. KG, sourcing products from global manufacturing facilities in Germany, the United States, Brazil, Austria, China, and Switzerland. Products are distributed exclusively through a network of independently owned dealers, which provide in-store advice, servicing, and technical support.

A Queensland-based STIHL dealer, the Kendray family's Nambour STIHL Shop, was named regional dealer of the year for 2022, as recognised by STIHL Australia marketing director Joanne Katsos.[2]

Product Range

STIHL Australia offers petrol, electric, and battery-powered outdoor power tools, including chainsaws, blowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, brushcutters, and lawn mowers. According to Canstar Blue, STIHL supplies chainsaws suited to homeowners, landowners, professionals, and emergency services.[3]

In 2024, STIHL Australia released the MSA 300 C-O — described by Man of Many as the world's first professional-grade battery-powered chainsaw to match petrol performance standards — available across STIHL's 650-strong Australian dealer network.[4]

STIHL Australia's battery-powered tools are organised into three compatibility tiers:

  • AS Series — compact, lightweight tools (e.g. KOA 20 portable air compressor)[5]
  • AK Series — home and garden applications
  • AP Series — professional and commercial use, including the AP 500 S battery powering the MSA 300 C-O chainsaw[4]

Independent consumer publications have reviewed STIHL Australia's range. Tech Guide assessed the hedge trimmer, brushcutter, and pressure washer lines,[6] and Fishing World reviewed the KOA 20 portable air compressor for outdoor and rural audiences.[5]

Online Store Launch (2025)

In 2025, STIHL Australia launched an official dealer online store — shop.stihl.com.au — enabling customers to browse products, check stock availability, and purchase online with local dealer fulfilment via click-and-collect. The platform integrates the existing dealer network while allowing nationwide product access.

Research and Innovation

Product development for STIHL Australia's range is directed by the company's global R&D centre in Waiblingen, Germany. Features applied to the Australian-market range include anti-vibration systems, tool-free chain tensioning, and reduced-emission engine technology. The MSA 300 C-O chainsaw incorporates a full anti-vibration system — a first for a battery-powered chainsaw — alongside a smart motor management system that adjusts performance in response to battery or heat conditions.[4]

Marketing and Sponsorship

STIHL Australia is a founding sponsor of the STIHL Timbersports® Series, a global wood-chopping competition with deep roots in Australian forestry culture. The Australian national team, the Chopperoos, secured their fifth consecutive world championship title in 2023.[7] The competition has received coverage by ABC News[8] and The Guardian.[9]

STIHL Australia has participated in community initiatives. In 2024, the company donated a cordless chainsaw to the San Remo State Emergency Service unit in Victoria, providing onsite product training to members.[10] STIHL Australia also received national television coverage through 7News in connection with a community recognition event in Ipswich, Queensland.[11]
