Early Life and Education
Safi was born in Kunar Province, in eastern Afghanistan, in March 2000. Details about his early education and training are not widely published, but he became involved in journalism as a young adult, developing an interest in reporting on social and political issues affecting Afghanistan.
Career
The Afghan Times In August 2022, Saeedullah Safi co-founded The Afghan Times, an independent online news outlet operated by Afghan journalists. The publication produces content in English, Pashto, and Dari, with a focus on human rights, press freedom, and issues affecting women, children, and civil society under the Taliban’s rule. Safi serves as a founding editor, contributing to editorial strategy and reporting on a range of topics.
The Afghan Times was established in response to the deteriorating media landscape in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The founders—Safi and colleague Salma Niazi—began the publication while in exile, continuing to provide independent reporting amid censorship and threats to journalists.
International Journalism and Writing Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Safi and his family left the country due to security concerns. They ultimately resettled in Ireland, where he continued his journalism career. Safi has written opinion and feature articles for The Irish Times tackling topics such as media freedom, the situation of Afghan exiles, and the challenges facing Afghan women under Taliban restrictions.[3]
