History
Safe Software was founded in 1993, by Don Murray and Dale Lutz in response to data interoperability issues faced by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests. At the time, forestry mapping and spatial information were stored in multiple incompatible formats, creating difficulties for data exchange and analysis. Murray and Lutz began developing tools to translate and integrate these datasets, which led to the release of the FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) in 1996.[4][5][6]
In January 2024, JMI Equity obtained a minor share of Safe Software.[7][3]
In 2025, Safe Software reported surpassing $100 million in annual revenue.[8][9]
Safe Software has appeared as a Niche Player in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools for six consecutive years, including the 2024 and 2025 reports. Gartner’s evaluation compares the company’s FME platform with products from vendors such as Informatica, IBM, and SAP.[10]
In August 2024, the company also received B Corp Certification from the non-profit organization B Lab.[11]
