Early life and education
Sahara Sharma was born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal in the late 1980s.[1] She pursued her higher education in India, where she graduated with a Master of Science in Communication from Bangalore University.[1][2]
Career
Sahara Sharma is an independent filmmaker from Nepal who is currently based in New York. She is the founder of Gauthali Entertainment, which is a woman-owned production company that emphasizes on feminist cinema and film education. Sharma's work usually focus on issues such as social issues, migration, and women living in contemporary Nepal.[2][3] [4]
Her debut feature film, Indreni Khojdai Jada (Chasing Rainbows), focuses on the struggles of three siblings migrating to Kathmandu, discussing sexuality and depression among Nepalese youth.[5] In 2013, the film opened the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF).[1][6]It received the Critics' Award also referred as the Jury Prize at Toronto Nepali Film Festival (2014).[5]
Sharma is the first Nepali female filmmaker to receive Hubert Bals Fund grant for her film project Ek Mutthi Badal( My Share of Sky).[7] The project received international recognition at the NFDC Film Bazaar, where it won the Rotterdam Lab Award.[8]
