History

Historical accounts from Cheshire golf note that Daniel Mylrea[6] was instrumental in establishing the club and later played a leading role in the creation of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs in 1920[7].

Three time Open Championship winner Henry Cotton came to Sale Golf Club in October, 1939 to play an exhibition match against Richard Burton, the current Open Champion. They played in support of the British Red Cross funds and around 2,500 spectators showed up to watch the match. The day raised £310, one of the largest totals collected at the gate in an exhibition match in England, towards “Cotton and Co.’s Red Cross Contributions” – a wartime fundraising effort associated with Henry Cotton. [8][9]

Richard “Dick” Burton (1907–1974) was the club professional at Sale GC from 1937 to 1946. While attached to Sale, Burton won the 1939 Open Championship[2][10] around St Andrews' Old Course. Because the Open was not contested again until 1946 owing to the Second World War, he remained the reigning champion for seven years, the longest such span in the championship’s history. The club later commemorated Burton through the Richard Burton Trophy and by displaying the putter he used in his 1939 Open victory in the clubhouse.[11]

Clubhouse

The clubhouse occupies Sale Lodge, a villa dating from around 1830 and associated with Sale Old Hall, which has been identified by Trafford Council as a local heritage asset.[11]

Course

The 18 hole parkland course lies on relatively flat ground between the River Mersey and the M60 motorway. Holes are bordered in places by mature trees and water features, which form part of its layout and playing character. The club’s course is presented as a traditional members’ course rather than a championship venue, with the emphasis on playable parkland golf close to the urban area of south Manchester.

The course measures 6,301 yards from the white tees and is played to a par of 70; from the yellow tees it measures 5,944 yards, also for par 70; and from the red tees it measures 5,488 yards for par 72.[12][13]
