History
Historically, loan servicing, defined as managing loans once they have been originated, as well as managing collections, communicating with borrowers, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, has required significant labor force investments in the form of large-scale call center operations. As noted by Fortune, it is estimated that lenders collectively spend $20 billion to $30 billion each year to service auto debt in the U.S.[1]
Background
Ari Malik co-founded Salient in 2023 along with Mukund Tibrewala. Malik had previously served as director of sales finance at Tesla, where he recognized inefficiencies in loan management activities post-origination. Tibrewala previously held positions in engineering roles at both Dropbox and Airtable. The company entered into Y Combinator's Winter 2023 cohort.[2]
Following the development of publicly available large-language model code such as Meta's LLaMA 2, in mid-2023, the founders were able to develop their initial prototype. Malik and Tibrewala demonstrated the capability of their technology to early prospective customers using an AI-generated voice clone to simulate actual conversations. This method of demonstration secured Salient's first few clients. In one instance, the company's first client, Westlake Financial, engaged in a pilot program whereby Malik and Tibrewala operated onsite at Westlake's offices to manage deployment.[3]
In July 2025, Salient received a $60 million investment in a Series A funding round, supported by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Matrix Partners, Y Combinator, General Catalyst, and investor Michael Ovitz. At the time of the Series A funding round, Salient was valued at around $350 million.[4][5] By the end of 2025, after receiving another $10 million in funding, Salient's value increased to about $500 million. Additionally, the company reported achieving $25 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), nearly doubling the amount achieved just six months earlier. Salient claimed to be losing no customers and converting every one of its pilots into paid agreements.[6]
In November 2025, Salient received recognition as an inductee in JPMorgan Chase's Hall of Innovation at the bank's 17th annual Technology Innovation Symposium. The Hall of Innovation recognizes companies in the firm's technology ecosystem that provide impactful technologies.[7]
Products
Salient's platform consists of three core components: an AI agent system that manages borrower communications across voice, text, email, and chat; a compliance monitoring suite that tracks interactions against federal and state lending regulations; and a servicing automation module covering fraud detection, portfolio insights, and insurance workflows.[8]
The platform is built to interface with existing loan management systems and contact center software without requiring lenders to replace their existing infrastructure.[9]
Customers
As of late 2025, Salient reported working with more than five of the top ten auto lenders in the United States and processing millions of calls per day.[10] Publicly identified customers include American Credit Acceptance, Exeter Finance, Westlake Financial, and Consumer Portfolio Services (Nasdaq: CPSS).[11][12] Westlake Financial reported annual savings of $12 million attributable to the platform.[13]
The company reported having processed more than $1 billion in transactions since its launch.[14]
