Sarthak Chaturvedi (born 7 April 1985) is an Indian lawyer who practises as an advocate before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court. He is the founder of the law firm Sarthak Chaturvedi & Co., based in New Delhi. He has served as counsel representing various government departments and union territories, and has been associated with India's National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (NADDP) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.[1]

Early life and education

Sarthak Chaturvedi was born on 7 April 1985 in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India. He completed his schooling from the ICSE and ISC boards before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005 and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 2008 from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University), Agra.[2] He also completed a certificate programme in Cyber Law from Symbiosis, Pune.

He belongs to a family with an academic and professional background. His grandfather, Pandit Raghunath Prasad Chaturvedi, was a Sanskrit scholar and educationist associated with Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mathura Cantonment. His father, the late Dr. M. L. Chaturvedi, was a physician in Mathura and served as President of the Indian Medical Association (Mathura chapter) and the Hospitals Association of Mathura.

Chaturvedi enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in January 2010.[3] He began his legal practice in criminal law at trial courts in Mathura before relocating to New Delhi, where he developed an appellate practice. He subsequently commenced practice before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court.

He is a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Delhi High Court Bar Association.

Government appointments

In 2014, Chaturvedi was appointed as Counsel for the Union of India, representing various central government departments before the Delhi High Court. In 2015, he was appointed as Counsel for the Government of Andaman and Nicobar Islands before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), and also served as Counsel for the Government of Puducherry.[4]

He has been associated with the National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (NADDP) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in the capacity of Chairperson/Member (Legal).[5]

He has also served as Panel Counsel for NHPC (Government of India) since 2018, and for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. He has additionally served as Counsel for Nagar Nigam Bhopal at the Supreme Court.

The following cases have been reported in the Indian press in connection with Chaturvedi's involvement as counsel or petitioner.

Sidhu Moosewala murder case (2022)

Chaturvedi filed a petition before the Supreme Court of India seeking transfer of investigation in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).[6]

Phone tapping and surveillance petition (2019)

Chaturvedi filed a petition before the Delhi High Court seeking the framing of comprehensive guidelines by the CBI regarding phone tapping and surveillance of calls, and the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate alleged illegal surveillance of senior officials including NSA Ajit Doval.[7] The court issued notice to the CBI and the Centre seeking their response.

Abhishek Banerjee affidavit case (2019)

A petition was filed by Chaturvedi before a Special Court alleging discrepancies in the election affidavit filings of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The court summoned Banerjee in response.[8][9]

Krishna Janmabhoomi–Shahi Eidgah case

Chaturvedi filed a Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court of India seeking an ASI scientific survey of the disputed religious site at Mathura, on the lines of the survey conducted at the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi.[10]

Anti-doping adjudication

Chaturvedi has served in an adjudicative capacity with India's National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, which handles doping violation cases under the WADA Code and the National Anti-Doping Rules, 2021.[11]

He has also represented India at the International Bar and Bench Badminton Tournament held in Phuket, Thailand.[12]

Chaturvedi has appeared as a legal commentator on Lok Sabha TV in programmes including Faisle, India Speaks, and Nyay Chakra. He has been quoted in publications including The Times of India, Dainik Jagran, and News18 in connection with specific legal matters.[13][14]

Social activism

Chaturvedi has worked as a Right to Information (RTI) activist and has conducted awareness programmes on voting rights, transparency, and fundamental rights.[15]

He is associated with several social organisations:

  • Founder Member – Pt. Raghunath Prasad Chaturvedi Charitable Trust, focused on healthcare for the underprivileged and awareness campaigns against female foeticide.
  • Former Divisional Warden – Civil Defence, Mathura.
  • Legal Expert and Researcher – Bharat Punah Nirman Foundation, conducting research and drafting RTI appeals.
