Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras[1] and the Founder, and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of The ePlane Company.[2] He is known for his work in aerospace engineering, electric aviation, and deep-technology entrepreneurship.
In addition to leading The ePlane Company, he has been associated with other aerospace ventures, including Agnikul Cosmos and Aerostrovilos.[2] [3] [4] These startups focus on advanced propulsion systems and space technologies. His involvement in these ventures reflects his efforts to translate academic research into commercial aerospace applications.
Through The ePlane Company, he is leading the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for urban mobility, including air taxis and air ambulances.[1] His professional work connects research, innovation, and startup development within India’s growing aerospace and deep-technology ecosystem.
Education
Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy completed his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in 1991.[5] He then pursued higher studies in the United States and earned a Master of Science (M.S.) in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992.
He continued his doctoral research at the Georgia Institute of Technology and received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 1995. His academic training focused on aerospace engineering, combustion, and propulsion systems, which later became central areas of his research and professional work.
This progression from undergraduate studies at IIT Madras to advanced graduate and doctoral work at Georgia Tech reflects a strong academic foundation in aerospace engineering and related technologies.[5]
Career
After completing his PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy worked at Georgia Tech for a brief post-doctoral period of approximately two years until 1997.[5] In 1997, he returned to IIT Madras as a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. He has also served as a visiting professor at Georgia Tech during 2000–2001 and at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2009.[5]
In addition to his academic career, he has been involved in several aerospace and deep-technology ventures. He has served as Co-Founder of AgniKul Cosmos since February 2017.[3][4] He later became Co-Founder of GalaxEye in May 2021. Since February 2022, he has also been associated with TuTr Hyperloop as a Co-Founder and Advisor in a part-time capacity.[6][12] These roles reflect his continued involvement in space technology, satellite systems, and next-generation transportation initiatives.[7]
The ePlane Company
Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy founded The ePlane Company (incorporated as Ubifly Technologies Private Limited) in 2019 and serves as its Founder, and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The company was incubated at IIT Madras and focuses on developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban mobility. Its flagship aircraft, the e200X, is a three-seater eVTOL designed for short intra-city and inter-city travel, with a projected range of approximately 110 km and a cruise speed of about 175 km/h.[7]
In 2023, the company received Design Organisation Approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for an electric aircraft. In early 2025, the DGCA accepted its application for type certification of an eVTOL aircraft. The ePlane Company has raised $14 million in Series B funding in the last round.[8] [9]
