Sean McAnuff (born 18 July 1997) is an Irish short track speed skater. Born and raised in Canada, he represents Ireland in international competition. He is based in Budapest, where he trains while competing primarily in the 500 metres and 1000 metres events. McAnuff holds Irish national records in both distances.

Early life and background
McAnuff was born in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in a family involved in speed skating. He is the youngest of four brothers, several of whom competed in the sport after exposure to speed skating during the 2002 Winter Olympics. He began skating at a young age through local clubs in Ontario, where organized training programs were available.
He holds dual Canadian and Irish citizenship through his paternal grandparents, who emigrated from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Canada in the 1950s. A family visit to Ireland in 2010 later influenced his decision to represent Ireland internationally.[1]
Career
Early career
McAnuff trained with the Oakville Speed Skating Club before joining higher-level training programs in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Along with his brother Ryan McAnuff, he competed in national and regional competitions in North America during his junior career.[2]
Representing Ireland
In the mid-2010s, McAnuff and his family contacted the Ice Skating Association of Ireland (ISAI) regarding the establishment of a national short track speed skating program. Following Ireland's provisional membership with the International Skating Union (ISU), he began representing the country in international competitions.
McAnuff and his brother were involved in organising early training camps for Irish short track skaters, including assisting with coaching and equipment logistics. Ireland became a full ISU member for speed skating in 2016.[3]
International competition
McAnuff has competed at European Championships, World Cups and World Championships. His primary events are the 500 metres and 1000 metres. At the 2023 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships, he finished 19th in the 500 metres.
At an ISU World Cup event in Calgary, he set Irish national records in both the 500 metres and 1000 metres.[4] In 2025, he placed 26th in the 1000 metres at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Beijing.[1]
Training and residence
Since 2020, McAnuff has been based in Budapest, Hungary, where he trains with the Hungarian national short track speed skating team. He relocated after making contacts within the Hungarian skating community through international competitions.[1]
Personal life
McAnuff is a Christian and has spoken publicly about the role of faith in his life. He and his wife, Jessica, have participated in church-related community and humanitarian initiatives, including support projects in Canada and aid efforts related to Ukraine. In addition to his sporting career, he has worked in his wife's café business in Budapest.[5]
