The Sert family is a prominent Turkish business family originating from Beyşehir, Konya Province, Turkey. The family is best known as the founders of Sert Holding A.Ş., a diversified conglomerate established in 1988, as well as for their long-standing association with Yüksel Holding A.Ş., one of Turkey's major construction and industrial groups. Across three generations, the Sert family has been active in sectors including insurance, LPG distribution, coal mining, tourism, and industrial manufacturing.[1]

Origins

The family originates from Beyşehir, a district in Konya Province in central Turkey. Mehmet Sert (1929–2010), the family patriarch, built the foundation of the family's business empire after a long career at Şeker Fabrikaları A.Ş. (Sugar Factories Inc.), eventually consolidating the family's various ventures under Sert Holding A.Ş. in 1988.[2]

Family Members

First Generation

Mehmet Sert (1929–2010) was born in Beyşehir, Konya. After a long career at Şeker Fabrikaları A.Ş., he founded Sert Holding A.Ş. in 1988 to bring several family-owned businesses under one corporate structure. He led the group through decades of diversification across insurance, LPG, coal mining, tourism and manufacturing. He passed away on 8 April 2010. He was married and had three children and four grandchildren.[3]

Second Generation

İbrahim Ünsal Sert (1953–2022) was born in Ereğli, Konya. A co-founder of Sert Holding, he was active in the family's industrial and commercial ventures from 1980 until his passing on 3 March 2022.[4]

Yurdal Sert, born in 1961 in Ankara, is the current Chairman of Sert Holding A.Ş. He completed his secondary education in England and holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), graduating in 1982. Yurdal Sert was instrumental in attracting Total Petrol to invest in Turkey and served three years on the board of Total Gaz. He also served ten years on the board of Şeker Sigorta, continuing for a further three years following its acquisition by Liberty Mutual Group. He has held board positions at Yüksel Holding, Yüksel İnşaat, Abana Motorsan, Meksa Menkul Değerler, and Konya TED Koleji, among others.[5][6]

Müslüm Sert is a member of the second generation of the Sert family. He has two children, Beren Sert and Can Sert, who represent the third generation of the family.

Third Generation

Kaan Sert, born in 1980 in Ankara, is the grandson of Mehmet Sert and the son of İbrahim Ünsal Sert. He holds a bachelor's degree from Istanbul Bilgi University and a Master of Arts (MA) from Regent's University London. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board and CEO of both Sert Holding A.Ş. and Total Turizm İşletmeleri A.Ş.[7]

Beren Sert and Can Sert are the children of Müslüm Sert, representing the third generation of the Sert family.

Business Interests

Sert Holding A.Ş.

Founded in 1988 by Mehmet Sert, Sert Holding A.Ş. is the family's primary holding company, headquartered in Ankara. Over its history it has operated in insurance (through Şeker Sigorta), LPG distribution and cylinder manufacturing, underground coal mining, tourism, and zipper manufacturing. A landmark transaction saw the family sell their stake in Şeker Sigorta to the American insurer Liberty Mutual Group.[8]

Current active subsidiaries include:

  • Total Turizm İşletmeleri A.Ş. – Founded in 1993, it owns the Majesty Club Tuana, a five-star holiday resort in Fethiye, Antalya, operated by Öger Tur.
  • Abana Motorsan Sanayi – An electric motor manufacturer based in Kastamonu, with origins in a former Siemens factory relocated from Germany.

Yüksel Holding A.Ş.

The Sert family holds a 25% associate stake in Yüksel Holding A.Ş., one of Turkey's prominent construction and industrial conglomerates, and is represented on its board of directors.[9]

Sert Group (Sert Yatırım Holding S.A.)

A separate international entity headquartered at Beybi Giz Plaza, Maslak, Istanbul, operating in FMCG, Energy, Construction and Private Equity with a focus on Turkmenistan and global markets.[10]
