History

The SC42DMs were ordered to replace all of Metro-North's P32AC-DM locomotives, most of which are nearing the end of their useful service lives. Metro-North plans to cut emissions of diesel stock by 85%[3] after retiring all older locomotives.

On September 22, 2025, SC42-DM #301 made its first run on the Hudson Line. Due to the Hudson Line requiring diesel service north of Croton-Harmon, all SC42DMs in service are mainly assigned to the route, but can be assigned to Harlem Line and New Haven Line services when needed.
