History
Skyline Communications was founded in 1985 by Leo Vandenberghe as a distributor of telecommunications hardware. In 2000, the company transitioned from hardware distribution to software development, beginning the design of its vendor-independent NMS platform, DataMiner.[1]
In 2012, the company received the "Export Lion" award from Flanders Investment and Trade for its expansion into international markets.[3] In 2017, Skyline Communications became the first company to win the award for a second time, this time in the category for large companies.[4][5]
Leadership of the company passed to the founder's three sons—Ben, Bert, and Frederik Vandenberghe—following Leo Vandenberghe's retirement in 2015.[6]
In 2023, the company became a subject of national media discussion in Belgium when its leadership returned its 2017 Export Lion award to the Flemish Government. The act was a formal protest against the "Ventilus" high-voltage power line project, which the company argued would negatively impact the Izegem region's business environment and the health of its employees.[7][8][9]
Operations and Facilities
The company's primary campus, Skyline Park, is located in Izegem. The site includes an 11-story office tower designed by Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects, which was completed in 2019.[10] The tower functions as both the corporate headquarters and a business center for technology startups.
Skyline Communications maintains several regional engineering hubs for international software support:
- Europe: A software development center is located in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2022, a hub was opened in the Avaz Twist Tower in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to manage regional operations in the Balkans.[11]
- Americas: Regional operations are managed from Weston, Florida.
- Asia-Pacific: A regional hub was established in Singapore in 2017 to provide technical services for the APAC market.[12]
Product
The company's main software platform is DataMiner. It is categorized as a multi-vendor network management and orchestration system. The platform aggregates data from hardware and software components from different manufacturers into a single management interface, using a driver-based architecture to enable interoperability.[13]
