History

The St. Augustine Education Society was founded in 1970 by C.R. Gasper (1942–2012), an educationist who established a group of schools in West Bengal. The Barrackpore school was established in 1985 as an English-medium co-educational institution. The school is named after Saint Augustine of Hippo, the patron saint of all institutions under the Society. Gasper also contributed to education beyond his own schools, playing a key role in establishing vernacular-medium schools in Canning, West Bengal, and in Narendrapur, Odisha.[2]

Management

The school is governed by The St. Augustine Education Society, which also manages St. Augustine's Day School, Shyamnagar; St. Augustine's Day School for Girls, Barrackpore (CBSE); and St. Augustine's Day School for Boys, Barrackpore (CBSE). The Society is headed by Janet Gasper Chowdhury as President and Amitava Chowdhury as Secretary & CEO.[2]

Academics

The school follows the ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) curricula under CISCE. In the 2024 board examinations, school toppers Aishee Sengupta and Prerona Banerjee secured third position in West Bengal in the ICSE with 99.2%, while ISC topper Ahana Chakraborty scored 99.5% to finish second in the state.[3] The school runs an Activity-Based Curriculum (ABC) for students from Nursery to Class VIII, integrating classroom instruction with co-curricular activities. In 2023, more than 400 students were recognised for achievements across three award categories at the programme's prize distribution ceremony.[4]

School's Mission

According to the official website, the school's mission is "Success for every child."[2]

Events

The school organises an annual inter-school cultural festival called Augustus Auxesis. In November 2023, the sixth edition of the festival saw participation from twenty schools across Kolkata and West Bengal. The Barrackpore Police Commissioner, IPS Alok Rajoria, was present at the event and noted the achievement of bringing together schools from across the state.[5]

COVID-19 Response

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the school conducted virtual prize distribution ceremonies in 2020. Eminent cardiac surgeon Kunal Sarkar presided over the senior school ceremony, while Debiprasad Duari, Director of the MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, addressed the junior school programme.[6]
