Her music often draws on Eastern philosophical ideas and has been reviewed in The Independent, Financial Times and The Guardian.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Sun earned a B.A. from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before moving to the United Kingdom, where she completed her Master’s degree and Doctorate in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, London.[3] Her research examined how Taoism, Zen Buddhism and embodiment can inform contemporary composition.[4]
Career
Sun’s music has been performed internationally and she has composed for the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, BBC Singers, and National Youth Choir of Great Britain.[4]
She was as one of the composers to Black Sabbath: The Ballet (Birmingham Royal Ballet, 2023),[1][2][5] and co-created Bound/Unbound, a music-dance theatre piece with composer Alex Ho for the collective Tangram and the London Symphony Orchestra.[6][7]
Her works include that which is unseen… for the London Philharmonic Orchestra,[3] the dance pieces Ensō and Now I Will Do Nothing but Listen for the London Symphony Orchestra,[4] and collaborations with Lico Kehua Li on Conduit and BLUESHIFT | Infinite Cycle.[8]
In 2025 the London Sinfonietta performed Conduit directed and composed by her at the Southbank Centre.[9]
She was named a Royal Philharmonic Society Composer (2023–24), premiering a new work through the Society’s Composer Programme.[10] Her commission received a review in Music Opinions magazine, which discussed the work as “a compelling synthesis of Eastern and Western sonorities” and noted her “distinctive transnational voice.”[11]
Style and reception
Sun’s music explores extended instrumental techniques, electronics and spatial sound, often reflecting concepts of balance and impermanence from Eastern philosophy.[3]
Critics have described her work as “the future way to go” (The Independent) and praised its “harmonic imagination and mastery of instrumentation” (Bachtrack).[4]
The Financial Times noted her “brassy, filmic orchestration” in Black Sabbath: The Ballet, while The Observer called the sound “rich, strange and beguiling.”[1][2]
The Stage described Bound/Unbound as “an evocative musical conversation between East and West,” while the Morning Star awarded the production five stars.[7][12]
