Background and release
Sweet Boy was released on April 5, 2024.[4] Speaking about the opening single, Malcolm stated, "'Earrings' is the perfect intro to my heartbreak mixtape Sweet Boy. The song walks through my brain as I try to reach out to someone I’ve lost connection with."[5] The mixtape has lovesick themes throughout it, such as missing an ex, troubled relationships, and young love being intense.[4]
Malcolm released two EPs "Sweet Boy Pt. 1" and "Sweet Boy Pt 2," merging it into one cohesive mixtape.[4][6] Apart of the first EP was "On My Shoulder," "Thailand," "Ladygirl," "4Me 4Me," and "Rodrick Rules.[6]
Reception
Marcy Donelson of AllMusic rated Sweet Boy a 3 out of 5, stating that the songs on the mixtape had strong responses from listeners, which helped Malcolm Todd get a record deal with Columbia.[1] KXSC Radio described Sweet Boy as "a chraming mixtape with enchanting guitar melodies and catchy chorus'."[4] Writing for The Music Mag, Laure Ketterl noted that "Ladygirl" has a similar rhythm to Steve Lacy's Bad Habit.[6]
The mixtape earned Todd success on TikTok, leading to his record deal with Columbia.[7]
