Background
The Humour Awards was conceptualized to fill a dedicated niche in the Nigerian entertainment landscape — one solely focused on the comedy industry. The organizers describe it as the first comedy award event that recognises humorists for their crafts and creativity in the entertainment industry.[3]
The awards operate through the THA Academy, a panel of judges drawn from veteran figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Voting is split between the academy, industry professionals, and the public, with certain categories decided exclusively by the judging panel and others open to public voting via the THA website.[4]
Each edition is given a distinct theme. The maiden 2021 edition was themed The Revolution, while the 2023 edition carried the theme The Dream, The Glory.[5]
Editions
1st Edition (2021)
The maiden edition of The Humour Awards, themed The Revolution, took place on 14 November 2021 at the Balmoral Event Center, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, and was attended by approximately 1,000 guests.[1][6] The ceremony featured 20 award categories. Top-nominated acts included Funke Akindele and Basketmouth, each receiving three nominations.[4]
Notable industry figures who attended included AY Makun, Alibaba, Gbenga Adeyinka, Emmanuella, Julius Agwu, and Senator Dino Melaye.[6] The inaugural Revelation of the Year award was won by Nasboi, who received a one million naira prize from headline sponsor Minimie Nigeria.[6] The first Standup Comedian of the Year was awarded to Destalker, who received an all-expenses-paid landed property from Boundless Services.[6] Hall of Fame honours at the inaugural edition went to Chief Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya), Opa Williams, Alibaba, and Okey Bakassi.[6]
2nd Edition (2023)
The second edition, themed The Dream, The Glory, was held on 15 January 2023 at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos, drawing approximately 2,000 attendees.[1] The ceremony featured 20 award categories, with 13 categories open to public nomination and 7 honorary awards decided by the panel of judges, headed by veteran comic content producer Opa Williams.[7]
Leading the night were Real Warri Pikin, Nosa Rex, and Mr Macaroni, each taking home two awards.[8] Fast-rising female skit maker Posho Tilly (Adetola Sijuwade) also won two awards, including the Revelation of the Year prize along with a ₦1 million cash prize.[8]
The Hall of Fame honours were bestowed upon Nkem Owoh (popularly known as Osuofia), Wale Adenuga MFR, Ngozi Nwosu, and Sunday Omobolanle (Aluwe).[8][9] Posthumous awards were given to late comic actress Ada Ameh and Gbenga Adeboye.[8] Special Recognition awards went to Afeez Oyetoro (Saka), Klint Da Drunk, and Chinedu Ikedieze.[8][9]
3rd Edition (2024)
The third edition was themed Impossible is Nothing. At the media launch, founder Uche Dominic highlighted the growing influence of skit makers on Nigerian comedy, noting that platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok had enabled a new generation of comedians to reach a global audience. The edition expanded its categories to 24. Legendary comedian Gbenga Adeyinka presented a paper discussing the future of comedy in Nigeria and the emerging role of artificial intelligence in the industry.[1]

Reception and Significance
The Humour Awards has been recognized as a significant platform for elevating the profile of Nigerian comedy. The ceremony has been covered by major Nigerian media outlets including Vanguard, The Nation, and ThisDay Live, lending it credibility as a premier industry event.[6][8][5][9] By dedicating an entire ceremony exclusively to comedy — spanning both conventional media and social media content creators — THA has contributed to the professionalization of comedy as a distinct creative discipline in Nigeria.
The inclusion of a Hall of Fame category allows THA to honour veterans of the Nigerian comedy industry whose contributions predate the digital era, while categories like Best Online Skit Maker acknowledge the growth of a new generation of comedians who built their audiences on social media platforms. Founder Uche Dominic has noted that skit makers have not only captured the attention of millions of Nigerians but have also gained international recognition, contributing significantly to Nigeria's creative economy.[1]
