From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Obeya Association is an international professional network focused on the development and dissemination of the Obeya management practice. The organization promotes the use of Obeya as a method for visual management, cross-functional alignment and collaborative decision-making within organizations.[1]

The association functions as a community where practitioners exchange knowledge, develop frameworks and support the professional application of Obeya in areas such as strategy execution, product development and organizational transformation.[2]

Background

Obeya (Japanese: 大部屋, meaning “big room”) refers to a collaborative workspace where teams share information visually and coordinate work in order to support communication and decision-making.[3] The concept originated within the Toyota Production System and became widely known during the development of the Toyota Prius, where engineers and project leaders met regularly in a room where project information was displayed on the walls to coordinate complex engineering decisions.[4]

Obeya rooms typically display project objectives, milestones, technical issues and performance indicators visually so that teams can quickly assess progress and respond to problems.[5] The method has since been adopted in various sectors as part of Lean management and visual management practices to improve collaboration and organizational alignment.[6]

History

The Obeya Association was founded in 2020 by Dutch practitioners Dolf Reijnders and Bart Bongers with the aim of creating an international community around the Obeya practice.[7] The initiative emerged during a period of growing international interest in Obeya and visual management approaches derived from Lean management and the Toyota Production System.[8]

According to industry reporting, the association was created to support the professionalization of the Obeya field and to connect organizations and practitioners working with the method.[9]

Activities

The Obeya Association maintains an international practitioner community and provides knowledge resources related to the practical application of Obeya in organizations.[10] Its activities include the development of educational materials, knowledge sharing among practitioners and collaboration with consulting and training organizations working with visual management and Lean practices.[11]

The association also publishes guidance and frameworks related to visual management, meeting structures and cross-functional collaboration within organizations.[12]

Obeya Summit

The association organizes the 'Obeya Summit, an international event where practitioners and organizational leaders exchange experiences and case studies related to the application of Obeya.[13] The event focuses on topics such as strategy execution, organizational transformation and the practical use of visual management systems in complex organizations.[14]
