Background
Apple Maps in iOS 6 has a significant drawback: it omits transit directions, a feature that was previously available and highly valued by users who rely on public transportation. This decision stems from Apple’s switch to TomTom, a mapping service that doesn’t provide transit data. While the new Maps app offers turn-by-turn navigation for drivers, its lack of transit directions makes it less practical for commuters in cities with extensive public transport systems.
In contrast, Google Maps provides comprehensive route information for public transit, including details about the type of transit, departure and arrival times, and walking directions. The absence of integrated transit directions in Apple Maps forces users to rely on third-party apps, which can be a fragmented and inconvenient experience. Although Apple Maps does suggest a list of transit apps, finding and downloading the appropriate one can be cumbersome, and the information provided is often incomplete.[1][2]
Overview
Apple Maps Transit enables users to:
- View public transportation routes (buses, trains, subways, trams)
- Access schedule information for transit services
- Plan multi-modal journeys combining walking, transit, and other modes
