Early life

Travis Randall Clark was born on December 26, 1985, and grew up in Bradenton, Florida.[1] Since childhood, Clark and his future bandmates all attended Martha B. King Middle School, which eventually served as the inspiration for the band's name "We the Kings".[2] Clark began playing the drums at a young age, but later transitioned to rhythm guitar and focused heavily on songwriting, eventually becoming the central creative force for the group.[2]

Career

We the Kings

Clark co-founded the band in 2003, initially as "Broken Image" before officially adopting the name We the Kings in 2005.[3] The original lineup consisted of Clark, drummer Danny Duncan, and brothers Hunter Thomsen and Drew Thomsen.[4]

Under Clark's guidance as the primary songwriter, the band's self-titled debut album, was released in October 2007. The album launched their career, driven by the enduring success of the single "Check Yes Juliet" (2008), which Clark wrote and has since become a staple of the pop-punk genre. The single peaked at number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved Platinum status in Australia.[5]

The group followed up with Smile Kid (2009), which featured the singles "Heaven Can Wait"[6] and "We'll Be a Dream", a duet with singer Demi Lovato. His songwriting often draws directly from personal experience; for example, the 2013 single "Just Keep Breathing" from the Somewhere Somehow album was written about his experiences being bullied as a child.[7]

In addition to his work in the studio, Clark has played a key role in the band's online presence. He appears in The King's Carriage, a series of video skits uploaded to YouTube that document moments from the band's time on tour and daily activities, collectively attracting more than 300 million views. The band has also remained active as a live act, taking part in multiple Warped Tour lineups and staging anniversary tours for their releases, including a ten-year tour in 2017 celebrating their debut album.[5]

Collaborations and solo work

Outside of We the Kings, Clark has actively pursued various solo efforts and collaborations. In 2011, he released a solo acoustic EP WTK is a band, not a person, with all proceeds directed toward cancer research.[8] He is also recognized for lending his vocals to collaborative tracks, most notably in 2018 when he was featured as a guest vocalist on "Head Above Water" with Avril Lavigne.[9] Clark also collaborated with MGK (Machine Gun Kelly), whom he met through the Warped Tour circuit, where both artists performed regularly.[10]
