In mid-January 2017, it was reported that cinematographer-turned-director Jeeva Shankar of Naan (2012) fame has approached Bala's B Studios to produce his next project.[2] It was also reported that Atharvaa has been signed to play the lead role in the film produced by B Studios, marking their second collaboration between Bala and Atharvaa after Paradesi (2013).[3] With almost 6 years after the speculations, it was reported that the filming had began in Ramanathapuram in mid-January 2023.[4][5] During the promotions of Mathagam (2023), Atharvaa revealed that he is playing dual roles for the first time in this film.[6]
After the release of Parasakthi (2026) in January, on 6 February 2026, an official announcement was made, revealing the title of the film to be Valai.[7] The announcement was made through a teaser featuring Atharvaa in a dual role with Rupa Manjari and Vani Bhojan playing the lead roles opposite to Atharvaa.[8] Apart from the lead cast, the film also features Murali Sharma, Aadukalam Naren, Jayaprakash, Arjai, Aroul D. Shankar, Imman Annachi, Thulasi in important roles.[9] The technical team consists of music composer Ghibran Vaibodha and editor Sathish Suriya,[10] while the cinematography is handled by the director Jeeva himself.[11]
Music
The film has music composed by Ghibran Vaibodha in his fourth collaboration with Atharvaa after Trigger, Pattathu Arasan (both 2022) and DNA (2025) and second with Jeeva after Amara Kaaviyam (2014).
