Biography
Born in Recife to a family of Portuguese and Spanish descent, Chacon began his journalistic career as a teenager after a short trip to Europe, writing articles for Folha da Manhã.[1] After completing his law degree, he enrolled at the Catholic University of Pernambuco to study philosophy. In 1959, he earned a doctorate under Arnóbio Graça at the Faculty of Law of Recife, presenting a thesis titled Introdução ao problema da Sociologia do Direito. His works soon drew the attention of Gilberto Freyre, whom Chacon later met. Freyre had a significant role in his intellectual development and would eventually become the subject of an intellectual biography by Chacon.[2]
Another major influence on his work was the Recife School, to which he dedicated the study Da Escola do Recife ao Código Civil: Artur Orlando e sua geração and the book A luz do Norte: o Nordeste na história das ideias do Brasil.
In 1960, he completed postodoctorate studies at the University of Chicago and the following year he secured a position as a professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco with the thesis O fator econômico no marxismo.[3] In 1971, he was appointed full professor at the University of Brasília, where he became professur emeritus.
Chacon's works address several subjects, including Brazil's political institutions,[4] its intellectual culture, the influence of the Iberian Peninsula in Latin America, and biographies of figures such as the military officer José Inácio de Abreu e Lima and the diplomat Joaquim Nabuco.[5][6]
