Biography
Vasco Alexandre was born in 1993 in Lisbon, Portugal. He earned a bachelor’s degree in film at Middlesex University in London, including an Erasmus exchange at CEU San Pablo University in Madrid.[3] He later studied at Screen Academy Scotland in Edinburgh[4], where he completed a master’s degree in Film Directing in 2021.
He is the co-founder of Franzi Films, a film production company based in Copenhagen, Denmark,[5][6] and the programme director of Franzi Shorts, a screenwriting fund for short films.[7]
Career and Awards
Vasco's debut short film, Yard Kings (2020, United Kingdom), which he wrote and directed, is inspired by the British social realism tradition, whose standouts include Ken Loach and Andrea Arnold. The film depicts people’s struggles with poverty and exposure to various forms of violence. [8][9] Yard Kings received multiple awards and nominations, including:
- 2 Royal Television Society Awards, hosted by The Vivienne, and presented by the Royal Patron, Charles III[10][11][12]
- 1 Giornate della Luce Award presented by Ca' Foscari University of Venice[13][14]
- 8 Jury Choice FFTG Awards[15]
- 1 European Cinematography Award[16]
In 2023, Vasco adapted Joseph Paul Haines’ short story Ten With a Flag into a short film of the same name (United Kingdom),[17] which won Best National Film at Leiria Film Fest,[18][19][20] and received nine additional nominations at other festivals, including Fantasia Film Festival,[21] Sci-Fi London,[22] Aesthetica Short Film Festival,[23] Utopiales,[24] Filmquest,[25] and Curtas Vila do Conde.[26]
Later, his short film King (2024, Denmark) was nominated for Best Short Film at the Reykjavík International Film Festival[27] and Dallas International Film Festival.[28]
In 2025, his music video Monolink: Avalanche (Denmark/Germany) won Best International Music Video at Leeds Film Festival[29] and Best Nordic Music Video at Hanse Sail.[30]
