Background
"While he waited patiently for his beloved Anna Garcia to reach adulthood in order to enjoy an unconstrained romance with her under American law, Prince decided to record Anna Waiting for her, in which he explains—over a synthesizer gimmick reminiscent of Mountains, from 1986—their forbidden relationship: “This is where she wants to be/I am what she wants to see/I’ve never known a love so sweet/Still, I keep Anna waiting.” Prince played her the song on her eighteenth birthday, on 31 December 1988, and then asked her if he could change it to Vicki Waiting, so he could include it in Batman. Once his now official girlfriend greenlighted the modification, he recorded the new lyrics in February and added the song to the album. He imagined Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, as the narrator referring to Vicki Vale, who was played by Kim Basinger."[2]
"Although specific recording dates are not known, the track was a reworked version of the track Anna Waiting, for which basic tracking took place in December 1988 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (at around the same time Prince was approached about writing songs for the Batman movie). The song was written for Anna Garcia, and was given to her upon her arrival at Paisley Park on which she says was her eighteenth birthday, 31 December 1988, (although it seems more likely she in fact turned 19 on that day) along with a pink cashmere coat (the song Pink Cashmere had been recorded six months previously). Prince asked Anna Garcia for permission to change the lyrics for use in the Batman movie to fit the lead female character Vicki Vale, and the title and other lyrics were changed in February 1989."[citation needed]

“A month after seeing Batman footage, Prince played Burton eight songs, most synched to footage. Burton was overwhelmed. “He was way ahead of me,” he said. “Vicki Waiting” was first. Once called “Anna Waiting,” after a pal, it was moody and intense.”[3]
