The family became known in Alabama gospel music circles through extensive touring, a family-operated music school, appearances at regional gospel conventions, and recordings issued through Johnny Vise's independent label, Vise Recording & Publishing.[1]

History

Johnny Vise began studying music as a child and later became a minister, music educator, recording engineer, and founder of the Vise School of Music in Anniston.[1] Faye Vise, a pianist and vocalist, had performed and taught church music from an early age and studied music in several southern states.[1]

By the mid-1970s, the family consisted of Johnny and Faye Vise and their four children: Vincent, Kevin, Jason, and Jada.[1] Contemporary newspaper profiles described the family as both the Vise Family Singers and the Vise Squad, with the children forming a featured performing unit within the larger family group.[3]

According to a 1975 profile in The Anniston Star, the family traveled approximately 50,000 miles annually while maintaining a busy schedule of church appearances and gospel music events across the United States.[1] Their performances combined close vocal harmonies with instrumental accompaniment provided by family members on guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano, and organ.[1][4]

A 1984 feature article reported that the family had spent approximately nineteen years traveling as gospel singers and musicians, appearing throughout the continental United States and in Mexico.[2] The article also noted that the family had performed in approximately thirty-five states and had appeared in around one hundred churches while living in California.[2]

Touring and ministry

Throughout the 1970s, the Vise Family Singers maintained a regional and national touring ministry, appearing at churches, gospel sings, and religious events across the United States. Contemporary newspaper coverage documented performances in Florida,[5][6] South Carolina,[7] Mississippi,[8] and California.[9][10]

By 1978, California newspaper profiles described the family as a six-member gospel group that had sung in more than 30 states and overseas.[11][12] Another California article reported that the group was planning to participate in a two-week missionary revival in Australia.[13] The family was also identified in newspaper coverage as the "Vise Squad" professionally, with Johnny Vise described as having spent several years in music evangelism and staff-related ministries.[14]

Vise School of Music

In addition to performing, Johnny and Faye Vise operated the Vise School of Music in Anniston. Johnny taught guitar and advanced piano, while Faye taught piano and vocal instruction.[1]

The school also offered seasonal music camps and group instruction. A 1975 newspaper profile reported that more than 300 students attended the school annually.[1]

Recordings

The family recorded and released music through Vise Recording & Publishing, an independent label operated by Johnny Vise in Anniston.

In 1975, five-year-old Jada Vise recorded the single "Jada's Christmas Song (Santa Claus Helper)", backed with "Let the Sunshine In". The recording featured accompaniment by the Vise Squad and was distributed regionally and nationally.[15]

The article noted that the song was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and that the family planned additional recording sessions for future releases.[15]

Awards and recognition

In August 1974, the Singing Vise Family won first place at a Stamps gospel music festival held in Wedowee, Alabama. Contemporary coverage reported that gospel groups from several states participated in the competition and that the Vise Family was awarded the festival's top prize.[16]

The family was also featured at numerous gospel concerts and religious conventions throughout the southeastern United States, including appearances in Alabama, Florida, California, South Carolina, and Georgia.[2][17]

Later years

In February 1984, brothers John Vincent Vise, Mark Kevin Vise and Jason Morris Vise simultaneously enlisted in the United States Army. At the time, their father Johnny Vise stated that the family had spent approximately nineteen years traveling throughout the United States and Mexico as gospel performers known as the Vise Squad.[18]

Following the enlistments, the performing group continued with Johnny, Faye and Jada Vise.[18]

Johnny Mack Vise died in 1988 at the age of 49. His obituary described him as a minister of music, gospel performer and music educator who had studied at several universities, including Jacksonville State University.[19]

John Vincent Vise died in 1990 at the age of 28. His obituary noted that he had traveled extensively with the Vise Family Singers, served in the United States Army, worked for the Vise School of Music and performed as bassist for the Willie Hightower Band in Gadsden, Alabama.[20]

Legacy

The musical activities of the Vise family continued to be remembered in local and archival sources decades after their initial recordings and performances. In 2000, The Anniston Star highlighted the Vise Squad in its recurring "25 years ago in The Star" feature, recalling the group's performances throughout the Southeastern United States and the participation of five-year-old Jada Vise.[21]

In 2003, Jada Vise's 1975 recording "Jada's Christmas Song (Santa Claus's Helper)" was featured by WFMU's 365 Days Project, an archival music series devoted to obscure and overlooked recordings.[22]
