The company is recognized for its roll-up strategy, having acquired more than 100 local and regional wastewater service providers since its inception.[3] As of 2024, financial analysts estimated the company's EBITDA to be between $50 million and $60 million.[4]
History
Wind River Environmental was founded in 1999 to consolidate the fragmented septic and liquid waste industry in New England. Growth was fueled by private equity investment, including backing from Landis Capital and The Halifax Group.
In April 2017, the San Francisco-based private equity firm Gryphon Investors acquired a majority stake in the company.[5] Following this acquisition, the company expanded into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast through the purchase of regional firms such as Metro-Rooter in Florida and Skyline Plumbing in Georgia.[6] In 2025, the company continued its consolidation efforts with acquisitions in the Mid-Atlantic region.[7]
Operations
Wind River Environmental manages a fleet of over 1,100 vehicles and 16 waste treatment facilities.[2] Its operations are vertically integrated, covering the collection, processing, and disposal of non-hazardous liquid waste. The company provides services to residential, municipal, and commercial sectors, including grease trap management for national brands such as Starbucks and Whole Foods Market.[5]
Business Model and Education
The company has been the subject of academic study regarding its acquisition and crisis management strategies. In 2014, the Stanford Graduate School of Business published a case study titled Wind River Environmental, which examines the leadership and operational challenges faced by the company during its scaling phase.[8]
WRE operates "Wind River University," an internal training program designed to standardize technical service and safety protocols across its workforce.[2]
