Early life
Mark Laurence Richard Jr. was born on February 28, 1991 in South Windsor, Connecticut. He attended Springfield College[1] and got a degree in graphic design. After graduating college in 2009, he got a job working for the WWE.
Music career
Richard began his career on DatPiff, where he released his debut mixtape, Headphone Hero, on January 27, 2012. During this time, he was named Witty because of the "wit" showcased in his songwriting and his love for rhyming words.[4] A year later, on January 25, 2013, Richard released the lead single "Wake Up" for his sophomore mixtape Kindest Regards, which was released on November 28 that same year. He released both mixtapes for free on DatPiff. Eventually, he dropped the 'y' from his name "Witty" and rename himself to Witt Lowry, merging aspects from his middle name, Laurence. He felt the name change was necessary if he wanted his music to gain the attention he wanted as he felt that "Witty" was too difficult to find online.[5] The title track "Kindest Regards" and the song "Rescue" remain the only two songs from the mixtape on streaming services to this date.
On September 3, 2015, Richard released two lead singles to his debut studio album Dreaming With Our Eyes Open, titled "Running From Here" and "My Mistake". The album, which theme is centered around pursuing dreams while acknowledging the reality and struggle of getting there, released later that month on September 25, 2015 and features artists Trippz Michaud and Devvon Terrell.
On October 2, 2016, Richard began the rollout for his next sophomore studio album, I Could Not Plan This, with the first lead single "Numb".[6] The song received positive ratings, with many fans and critics praising the songwriting and vulnerability.[7] A few months later, Richard continued the rollout for the album, releasing "Let Me Know" on March 27, 2017. On July 31 of that year, Richard announced his very first headlining tour, "I Could Not Plan This Tour" with special guest, rapper Ro Ransom. That same day he released another single for the album, "Blood in the Water". A month later, on August 31, he released "Last Letter", a tribute to his late father who passed away in 2015 from cancer[8][9]. The music video for "Last Letter" featured Diary of a Wimpy Kid actor Zachary Gordon. Six days before the full release of the album, on September 12, he released the fifth and final single for the album, "Wishing Wells". I Could Not Plan This was fully released on streaming platforms on September 18, 2017.[10][11] The album delves into his idea of unpredictability and how he's noticed how he can't plan where his life will go. I Could Not Plan This features MAX, GJan, Tori Solkowski, Chris "Trippz" Michaud, Deion Reverie, and Dia Frampton from the rock duo Meg & Dia. On September 28, the album peaked at No. 54 on Billboard 200[12][13] and No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers. On October 10, 2017, Richard kicked off his "I Could Not Plan This Tour" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and announced his 2018 European leg on November 6, 2017,[14] selling out the entire UK leg.
On June 8, 2018, Richard released "Into Your Arms" which features American singer Ava Max. The song hit 100 million streams on May 20, 2021. On November 6, 2022, the album achieved the 2x platinum title.
On October 24, 2018, Richard released the first promotional material[15] for his third studio album Nevers Road on socials and later announced the first part of his first world tour for the album on November 18 that same year. On January 15, 2019, he released the lead single for the album titled "HURT".[16][17] The following month, on February 5, he released "GHOST",[18] the second promotional single. Social media influencer and TikToker Charli D'Amelio uploaded a dance choreography with the song to her TikTok account and the video has garnered over 15 million views as of December 2025.[19] On July 2, 2019, Richard released the third and final promotional single "CRASH",[20][21] written about a vehicle collision he was involved in a year prior.[22] On August 3, Richard performed a set at the Lollapalooza festival, where he showcased his new songs and a few songs from the album that, at the time, at been unreleased. The album, a reference to the road he grew up on, in South Windsor, Connecticut, officially released on August 30, 2019. The album features Dan Haynes, who produced the entirety of the album, Deion Reverie, WHATEVER WE ARE, and Dia Frampton. On September 9, the album debuted at No. 84 on the Billboard 200.
Richard returned to releasing music on January 31, 2020 with the release of "THE RISE". Over the next couple months, he would continue releasing singles, "YOUR SIDE" on February 27, "CHANGES" on March 1, and "PUSH YOUR LUCK" on May 21, which was a YouTube exclusive release. Richard took a hiatus from releasing music for a year before releasing "Put Me First" which features Josh Golden, on April 23, 2021.
A few months after Richards return, he released "How Should I Feel" on September 24, 2021, the lead single for his fourth studio album If You Don't Like the Story Write Your Own. After an extended hiatus, on October 7, 2022, Richard released the second single for the album, that being the title track. Later that month, on October 28, he released the third single for the album, "Nights Like This". The following month, "The War I'm Scared to Face", released on November 18. The day before the album's release, on December 8, Richard released the fifth and final single for the album, "Doesn't Feel the Same". If You Don't Like the Story Write Your Own was released onto streaming services on December 9, 2022 and was accompanied by a film which consisted of the music videos filmed for the promotional singles for the album. The album features Dani Sylvia, Deion Reverie, Tori Solkowski, Meg & Dia, Covey, Ollie, Gomey, Bryce Papenbrook, Deion Reverie, Kyd the Band, and Livingston. On February 17, 2023, Richard began the albums tour, which Livingston opened for, and finished on April 2.
