Plot

Melvin and Doug have been best friends since childhood. After some failed business ventures, Melvin decides that he’d like to get involved with a Get Rich Quick Scheme, which turns out to be a front for some strange criminals wishing to rob banks. While Melvin is willing to go along with the scheme in all of its illegality, Doug is skeptical and refuses to join.

The bank heist, led by Dagwood, quickly goes awry and his sidekick, Leg Hair Nelson, is killed by law enforcement. Knowing that this scheme was foolproof, Dagwood figures that someone sabotaged the heist from the inside - none other than Doug. He kidnaps Doug and ties him to a chair, then presents this dilemma to Melvin, forcing him to choose between exacting revenge on Doug, or joining him in his fate.

Production

The film began development in May 2023, with the script being written by Owen Swift and Joseph Jeavons after winning a finalist award for The Big Pelvis at the Student World Impact Film Festival.[1] The project was shot in Lakewood, Dallas, Texas.[2] The cast and crew was primarily made up of the combined teams from Parasocial and The Big Pelvis, including Jeavons, Swift, Sam Teague, Calvin Lewis, Zach Pennington, Beckett Nichols, and Howard May.

Reception

Despite the low budget and amateur quality of the film, James Learoyd of UK Film Review compared Wrists Tied to the earliest of Wes Anderson's films, Bottle Rocket, writing "This film was made by people who know movies, and understand the rhythms, patterns, and visual traits of the good ones (Bottle Rocket as the prime example)." [3] Similarly, Richard Propes of The Independent Critic praised the storytelling and performances, but didn't shy away from critiquing the technical quality of the short film. "If you're expecting studio quality filmmaking here, look elsewhere."[4] This was not the first of Jeavons' and Swift's low budget works to entertain an audience despite its technical rigidity. People Newspapers wrote about how these two filmmakers would host public screenings for their films at a local park in Lakewood, Wrists Tied included.[5]
