Nagmeldin Karamalla-Gaiballa (born 5 March 1966) is a Polish political scientist, economist, and academic whose work focuses on Sudanese politics, conflict, and democratization in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is affiliated with the University of Warsaw, where he lectures at the Faculty of Oriental Studies and serves as the Rector’s Plenipotentiary for Cultural Diversity.[1]

Early life and education

Karamalla-Gaiballa was born in Kosti, Sudan. He moved to Poland in 1988 and later studied at the Wrocław University of Economics, where he received a master's degree in finance and banking. He later earned a PhD in political science from the University of Szczecin.[2]

Academic career

Karamalla-Gaiballa has held academic and teaching positions at several higher education institutions in Poland. Since 2022, he has been an assistant professor at the University of Warsaw, affiliated with the Faculty of Asian and African Cultures.[3]

Between 2020 and 2023, he was associated with the WSHIU Academy of Applied Sciences (formerly the Poznań University of Commerce and Services), where he held a professorial position.

He has also delivered guest lectures at institutions including SWPS University in Warsaw, the University of Warsaw, and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the African Journal of Economics, Politics and Social Studies (AJEPSS).[4]

Research and publications

Karamalla-Gaiballa is the author of works on Sudanese politics, Darfur, and democratization in Africa. His 2025 book, Obstacles to Democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa: Key Challenges Seen Through a Sudanese Lens, was the subject of an independent review published by the Social Science Research Council's Kujenga Amani, which described the work as a substantial contribution to debates on governance and democratic development in Africa.[5] Karamalla-Gaiballa has also published analytical articles in international media, including Al Jazeera, where he discusses European–African relations, misinformation, and political dynamics in Sudan.[6][7][8][9]
