Yusuf Zine (born October 27, 1993) is a Canadian filmmaker, actor, and podcast host. He is recognized for creating and hosting podcasts such as Unascertained: The Case of Soleiman Faqiri and Extradition: The Search for Huseyin Celil for TVO, as well as directing the documentary I Am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts.

Early life and education

Zine studied at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Global Studies and a Master’s degree in Social Justice and Community Engagement.[1]

Career

Film and television

Zine began his career in film as a director and producer. His 2018 documentary I Am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts explores the experiences of Rohingya refugees. Mike McCahill of The Guardian commented that "Zine has the sense to fold his cast-sourced anecdotes into the strongest potted history the movies have so far provided of this situation." [2]

He later worked as a director’s assistant on the 2023 feature film Mustache, which premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.[3]

In 2023, Zine served as producer and writer on the CBC documentary My Brother, Soleiman, part of The Passionate Eye.[4] In 2024, the film was nominated at the 13th Canadian Screen Awards for Best Documentary Program. [5]

Zine has also worked as an actor, appearing in television series such as Doc, Murdoch Mysteries, What We Do In The Shadows, Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, and Thanksgiving.[6]

Podcasting and journalism

Zine created and hosted Unascertained: The Case of Soleiman Faqiri (2021), a TVO podcast examining the death of Soleiman Faqiri in an Ontario jail. [7] The series received multiple awards, including a Digital Publishing Award for Best Podcast: Current Affairs. [8]

He later hosted and wrote Extradition: The Search for Huseyin Celil (2024), a TVO podcast focusing on the case of a Canadian detained in China. Zine received a Signal Award for Best Host [9], and the series won a Gold Tower at the New York Festivals Radio Awards for Best Investigative Journalism Podcast. [10]
