Dysprosium(III) sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Dy2(SO4)3. A yellow octahydrate exists, forming monoclinic crystals.

Preparation

The octahydrate can be prepared by dissolving dysprosium oxide in sulfuric acid.[1] The anhydrous form is obtained by heating to 360 °C.[1]

Reactions

A dysprosium oxysulfide (Dy2O2S) phosphor is obtained by calcination of the hydrate under a reductive CO atmosphere at 1,153 K (880 °C; 1,616 °F).[4] If an air atmosphere is used instead, a dysprosium oxysulfate (Dy2O2SO4) forms at 1,313 K (1,040 °C; 1,904 °F).

A dysprosium sulfate-based coordination polymer, [((CH3)2NH2)9Dy5(SO4)12]n, has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.[5] It is of research interest as a proton-conducting material.

A hydroxysulfate (Dy4(OH)4(SO4)4(H2O)3)[6] and ethylsulfate (Dy(C2H5SO4)3·9H2O)[7] have also been characterized.
