East Java (Indonesian: Jawa Timur) was an electoral district (daerah pemilihan) in Indonesia used to elect members of the House of Representatives. When the constituency was first created for the 1955 elections, it had an electorate of more than 10 million people and was allocated 58 seats.[a] By the time of the 1999 elections, its electorate had grown to more than 20 million people and it was allocated 68 seats. The constituency's boundaries corresponded to the province of East Java.
In the 1955 elections, the constituency saw the "big four" parties—the Indonesian National Party (PNI), Masyumi Party, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI)—emerge as the largest parties, resulting in a four-way division.[4] Meanwhile, the district also saw a very even combined result between the non-religious parties and Islamic parties, with the former receiving 46.6% of the vote and the latter receiving 45.75% of the vote.[5]
