The plant has 20 to 25 grayish to brown spines, up to 2.5 cm (0.98 in) long, without distinction between central and radial spines. It produces pinkish-purple to magenta flowers, 6 to 12 cm (2.4 to 4.7 in) in diameter. The fruit is ovate, carmine red, 20 to 25 mm (0.79 to 0.98 in) long, and 15 to 20 mm (0.59 to 0.79 in) wide.[2]
