Edithvale railway station

Edithvale station is a railway station operated by Metro Trains Melbourne on the Frankston line, which is part of the Melbourne rail network. It serves the south-eastern suburb of the same name, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and opened on 20 September 1919. The current station was opened in November 2021.[6]

History
Edithvale station gets its name from Edithvale Road, itself named after a local farm, Edithvale Farm, which was established in the 1850s and owned by John and Edith Greves.[7][8]
In its early years, a siding existed on the down side before Platform 2.[9]
In 1978, boom barriers replaced interlocked gates at the former Edithvale Road level crossing, which was located at the down end of the station.[10] In 1981, the former ground level station buildings were provided.[11]

The Edithvale Road level crossing was grade separated under the Level Crossing Removal Project.[12] Construction started in 2020, with the former ground-level station closing on 25 July 2021 for demolition.[13] As part of the project, the line was lowered into a trench, and the station rebuilt, along with Chelsea and Bonbeach stations.[14] On 22 November of that year, the new below-ground station opened to passengers.[15][16]
