In the 1960's, he competed in the shot put, discus throw, and decathlon, and still holds the decathlon best in the shot put.^[2] In the 1970's, he switched to bobsledding, winning a gold medal in the four-man and a bronze medal in the two-man events at the 1972 Winter Olympics.
