McDonald was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire.[1] When she was 11, she won a competition set up by the Royal Academy of Dance in London, to study ballet in Leeds.[3] She subsequently gained a place at the Royal Ballet School.[1]
Career
She first worked in the London Ballet Company, and then with the Western Theatre Ballet, based in Bristol. This company had been established by choreographer Peter Darrell. Darrell was invited to relocate his company in 1969 to Glasgow in order to establish a national ballet company in Scotland. McDonald also moved to Glasgow at this time, and was promoted from Soloist to Principal.[3]
