Etymology
The genus name Ellagibacter is derived from modern Latin: acidum ellagicum (ellagic acid) and bacter (rod), meaning "ellagic acid-transforming rod."
Characteristics
Members of this genus are obligate anaerobes that play a role in polyphenol metabolism in the human gut microbiome. E. isourolithinifaciens is known to convert ellagic acid into isourolithin A, a urolithin metabolite with potential health benefits including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.[1][2]
