Escape the Night season 4

A montage retraces the series' toll — the estate, the masquerade, Everlock — as Joey confesses that every death was the price of his mistakes, and that he wants a way to make his wrongs right. Allied with the Society Against Evil, he opens a gateway to purgatory and enters the Museum of the Dead, where the Collector keeps the souls of his fallen friends as exhibits.

Rescue: Joey frees eight of his friends — seven veterans of the first three seasons and, among the museum's other prisoners, newcomer Bretman Rock — but the reunion is uneasy: several of the rescued hold Joey responsible for their deaths, and the group discovers they are now trapped in the museum together.

The Stakes: An Armageddon clock counts down to morning, when everyone inside will be turned to dust. The Egyptian exhibit awakens first, and the guests investigate the Pharaoh's tomb.

Eliminated: None — the episode ends mid-ritual, as the guests surround the sarcophagus with the Ankh and call on Anubis to release the Pharaoh's soul so his crimes can be avenged.

The guests solve the mystery of the Pharaoh's murder — the killer was his wife — and take control of the mummy.

Voted into the challenge: Justine and Tana.

Death Challenge: In the Sands of Egypt, the two race through the tomb's trials, placing twin sphinxes and claiming the Scepter of Isis — which cannot be touched by hand — to command the Pharaoh.

Challenge Winner: Tana, in an upset the group did not see coming.

Eliminated: Justine Ezarik (The Adventurer) — strangled by the Pharaoh, dying in the museum barely a night after being freed from it. Her death echoes her first: "It seems like just yesterday that I was buried alive."

Notes: The first key is claimed as something new stirs in the fog.

The museum's evil begins to infect the guests as the demon Garuda's exhibit opens.

The Coin Game (replacing the vote): The guests play a social game of gaining, stealing, and gifting coins through prompted choices — Joey pointedly gives his coins to Colleen to begin repairing their broken trust. When the bags are opened, the rule lands: "The two with the fewest coins will be forced into the final challenge."

Forced into the challenge: DeStorm (0 coins) and Timothy (13 coins).

Death Challenge: The two compete through Garuda's trial, surviving the demon's attacks to finish his tasks.

Challenge Winner: DeStorm — whose ruthless play ("Survival of the fittest") draws open condemnation from the group.

Eliminated: Timothy DeLaGhetto (The Con Man) — battered to death by Garuda.

Notes: Another life is exchanged for a key; this is the season's only elimination decided by a social game rather than a vote.

The Emperor's exhibit calls for a bride, and Rosanna talks her way into the role as the guests infiltrate the wedding — which ends in a bloodbath.

Voted into the challenge: Alex and DeStorm — reigniting the feud that defined their second season, with DeStorm dedicating his play to Lauren, the friend whose death began it.

Death Challenge: The two compete through the exhibit's trials for the Emperor's mercy, DeStorm's tactics once again drawing accusations of cheating.

Challenge Winner: Alex, who afterward renounces the darkness he has seen in himself: "I just saw a lot of evil... and I don't want to do that anymore."

Eliminated: DeStorm Power (The Enforcer) — stabbed in the stomach by the Emperor.

Notes: Another key is won — and the episode ends with hoofbeats and a warning: "Death is coming for you." The Black Knight has been unlocked.

A flashback shows the Black Knight taking Excalibur as Camelot falls. In the present, his exhibit opens, and he orders his Gorgon summoned once the sword joins his collection.

Voted into the challenge: Gabbie and Tana — a rematch of their season-two pairing, in which both survived. Tana votes for herself.

Death Challenge: The two compete in a challenge that again offers the chance for both to live. This time, both fail.

Eliminated: Gabbie Hanna (The Hollywood Star) and Tana Mongeau (The Pin-up Girl) — both stabbed by the Black Knight, the season's only double elimination.

Notes: Colleen proves herself the sword's true claimant, draws Excalibur, and slays the Black Knight. The guests recover a guardian angel stone — "save this for your rainiest days" — and realize with five keys still to find and five guests left, the math has turned against them. Both deaths were scripted: Gabbie had been fired for disruptive behavior on set, and Tana needed to leave for an awards show appearance.

The Gorgon returns and turns Mortimer to stone — the rainy day the stone was saved for. Invoking it, the guests summon Matthew and Nikita from the dead as guardian angels, whose magic can hold only so long in the museum.

Voted into the challenge: Alex and Colleen — with Joey volunteering to take Alex's place in the labyrinth, the season's only substitution.

Death Challenge: The competitors navigate the Minotaur's maze as the angels intervene where they can.

Challenge Winner: Joey.

Eliminated: Colleen Ballinger (The Duchess) — crushed by the Minotaur despite the angels' efforts to save her; Matthew is pulled back to the dead in the aftermath.

Notes: Bretman is left trapped in the maze's grip as the episode closes on a newly opened chest bearing a warning: "Wishes are not free."

The guests venture into the Arabian exhibit to free a genie from her chains — outsmarting her captors along the way, with Nikita's ruthless name-writing gambit doing the dirty work. But the angelic magic holding Nikita in the world fails, and she is torn back to the dead.

Voted into the challenge: Alex, Bretman, and Joey.

Death Challenge: The competitors complete the genie's trials.

Challenge Winners: Bretman and Joey.

Eliminated: None — the guests' lives are spared, the season's only challenge without a death.

Notes: The freed genie grants Joey a wish, which he makes in a whisper, telling the group only that he knows what is best for them.

Pirates invade the museum — and Joey's whispered wish is revealed as Colleen returns from the dead, permanently restored.

Voted into the challenge: Alex, Bretman, and Joey — the season's only three-way death challenge.

Death Challenge: Amid the pirate invasion, each competitor must prove himself worthy of the treasure.

Challenge Winners: Bretman and Joey.

Eliminated: Alex Wassabi (The Aviator) — found unworthy and shot in the chest three times by the pirates.

Notes: The guests claim another key as the exhibits grow bolder.

The final four journey into the prehistoric exhibit, the museum's oldest and most savage wing, drawing near to the source of the museum's evil.

Voted into the challenge: Bretman and Rosanna.

Death Challenge: The two race through the dinosaurs' territory in the season's final duel.

Challenge Winner: Bretman.

Eliminated: Rosanna Pansino (The Socialite) — torn to pieces and eaten by the dinosaurs.

Notes: Within an iron vault the survivors find the cosmic sphere, an artifact with the power to reshape space and time — and an ally's true motive is exposed: she has been using the guests to take the museum for herself.

The Collector returns home and reclaims her museum, ordering the survivors back to their exhibits "where you belong." An ally gives her life to open the way out — "No one knows the way back... My life is a small price."

Endgame: With the cosmic sphere in play, Joey finds the room where the rest of his dead friends have been trapped all along, and commits to freeing them no matter the cost. The Collector is overthrown, and the museum's hold breaks: the freed souls, including guests lost across all four seasons, emerge into the world as Colleen and Bretman escape through the portal.

Eliminated: None in a challenge.

Escaped: Bretman Rock and Colleen Ballinger — who asks the question the season ends on: where is Joey?

Outcome — Joey Graceffa: Unknown. Joey stays behind, opens Pandora's Box, and is pulled inside. He does not come through the portal.
