Fart School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fart School is a graphic novel co‑authored by Sina Khani and Tunç Topçuoğlu in 2008, during their studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. The work critiques institutionalized art education and cultural censorship. It was therefore initially cancelled by Linda van Deursen, head of the graphic design department, and tutor Will Holder, and remained unpublished.[1][2][3]

Background

The manuscript was created as part of Khani and Topçuoğlu's visual arts projects. It employs satire and absurdity to challenge conventional pedagogical practices and academic norms. Its cancellation was later interpreted by the authors as indicative of conservative resistance to experimental artistic approaches.[4][5]

Publication and Reception

Published in 2026, the manuscript was presented at Het Schaduwbal, a book fair exhibition in The Unsafe House. Its release was framed as an independent artistic project and a commentary on censorship within art institutions, sparking discussion about the limits of creative freedom in art schools.[6]
