Finger Guns spoke positively of how the game portrayed the difficulties of the COVID-19 lockdowns and its impacts on relationships.^[3] Nintendo Life praised the casting, especially that of Callum, and commended the technical achievement of developing a game during the COVID-19 lockdowns, but questioned who the intended audience of the game was.^[5]

Screen Rant criticized the lack of interactivity, suggesting the game might have been better if it rewarded players for choosing responses based on their memory and on noticing clues in prior interactions. "In Five Dates, the player is simply asked to randomly pick the most entertaining girl to date, creating the most agreeable boyfriend to match her. It may be amusing to see how many choices can be changed to create different outcomes, but Five Dates doesn’t live up to the potential its premise provides, and its too-malleable lead sees it land in no man's land instead."^[1]
