Frances White (born 1 November 1938, Leeds)[1] is an English actress, perhaps best known for her roles as Kate Hamilton in Crossroads and as Vera Flood in the BBC sitcom May to December.
Her father, Frank White, was a production designer whose credits include Clash of the Titans (1981). Originally, White had hoped to become a ballet dancer but upon having an interview for the Royal Ballet at Sadlers Wells Theatre at age 11, she was not accepted due to having "the wrong kind of feet" and a weak spine. Enjoying acting at school, she decided to go on to the Central School of Speech and Drama for three years, leaving with a contract at Dundee Repertory Theatre and a scholarship for Associated-Rediffusion, enabling her to appear in their productions.[2][3]
Career
White's TV appearances have included Juliet Bravo; Trevor's World of Sport; Dangerfield; Holby City; A Very Peculiar Practice; as Cassandra, prophetess of Troy, in the Doctor Who story The Myth Makers; as Julia, daughter of Augustus, Emperor of Rome, in I, Claudius; and as Queen Charlotte in Prince Regent.[4] Her film credits include roles in The Pumpkin Eater (1964), Press for Time (1966) and Mary, Queen of Scots (1971).[5] She voices Granny Pig in the children's animated series Peppa Pig (2004–present).[6]
White continues to act and do voice-overs. As a voice-over artist, she is represented by Rhubarb Voices.[7]
