Umar was appointed deputy governor of Taraba State following the impeachment of Sani Danladi by the Taraba State House of Assembly on 4 October 2012.[1] He became acting governor a month after his appointment when the Cessna 208 aircraft Governor Danbaba Suntai was piloting crashed on his way to Yola, Adamawa State. He was removed from office by the supreme court on 21 November 2014, when his predecessor was reinstated.[2]
