George Westhaver (born 5 May 1968) is an Anglican priest and theologian. Since 2013, he has served as Principal of Pusey House, an Anglican chaplaincy in Oxford, and is a Pusey Fellow of St Cross College.[1][2] In 2022 he received the Dunstan Award for Prayer and the Religious Life as part of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth Awards.[3][4]
Westhaver was born in 1968.[5] He grew up near Halifax, Nova Scotia. He studied philosophy and anthropology at McGill University and international development studies at St Mary's University in Halifax, and prepared for ordination at Wycliffe College in Toronto.[6][7]
He completed doctoral research at Durham University under the supervision of Andrew Louth on Edward Bouverie Pusey's unpublished lectures, "Types and Prophecies of the Old Testament".[6][8]
Ordained ministry
Westhaver was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in 1997 and as a priest in 1998.[5] He undertook his curacy at St Andrew's Church, Cherry Hinton in the Diocese of Ely.[5] He served in parish and chaplaincy roles in England and Canada, including service as chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford, and as assistant minister at St Michael at the North Gate, Oxford.[9][6]
Beginning in 2007, he served as rector of Saint George's Round Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, before returning to Oxford in 2013 to become Principal of Pusey House.[7][10][11]
As principal of Pusey House, Westhaver oversees worship, pastoral care, administration, and the House's academic and communal life.[9]
