Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), in Georgetown, Guyana, is the country's largest hospital. GPHC is the main teaching hospital in Guyana and serves as both a regional public hospital and as the national referral hospital.[1]
Its Seaman's Ward, the oldest section, was constructed in 1838.[2] The hospital is government-run with a capacity of 600 beds,[3] although in 2005 not all were used due to staff shortages.[4] GPHC's emergency department has an estimated annual volume of 75,000.[1]
Guyana's first open-heart surgery was performed at the GPHS's Caribbean Heart Institute in 2007.[5] In 2008, the first kidney transplant operation in Guyana was performed at the GPHC by US Army medical professionals for training and humanitarian purposes.[6][7]
In 2010, GPHC began an Emergency Medicine training program.[1] In 2015, GPHC received GY$80M worth of equipment from China for setting up a trauma centre.[8]
The first abdominal aortic aneurysm repair surgery in Guyana was performed at GPHC in 2020.[9]
