King Rostom, approaching 90, had adopted^[3] great-grandson of King Luarsab I, also Luarsab, as heir. Kartli's aristocracy resented yet another Persian-educated Muslim; Luarsab’s death in 1652 from a bullet while out hunting was no accident. Rostom then chose Vakhtang, the 35-year-old head of the House of Mukhrani, a branch of Bagrationi.^[4][5]

The tavadi were "grand nobles" who owned large satavado estates. Each satavado had its own sign of destinction and was granted by the king; after the tavadi died, the sign was returned to the king, who granted it to the new tavadi.^[6]
