Background and recording

Released as the first single from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, "Go Let It Out" was also the first Oasis single to appear on Big Brother Recordings, the band's own label.[1] The recording was produced by Mark Stent and Noel Gallagher, and was recorded at Wheeler End, Olympic Studios, Supernova Heights, and Chateau de la Colle Noire.[1]

The song samples the drums from Johnny Jenkins' recording of Dr. John's "I Walk on Guilded Splinters".[3] In a March 2000 interview with Mojo, Noel Gallagher said that the song "started out as this slow Beta Band thing", before speeding up and becoming "a psychedelic pop song".[4] In the "Lock the Box" interview included on the special edition of Stop the Clocks (2006), he described it as "the closest we came to sounding like a modern day Beatles".[5]

During the early sessions for Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Bonehead and Guigsy left Oasis, reducing the band on the finished recording to Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher and drummer Alan White.[6][3] By the time the single was being promoted, Gem Archer had joined as the band's new guitarist, while Andy Bell was announced soon afterwards as the new bassist.[6][7]

The B-side "Let's All Make Believe" later appeared on the Japanese edition of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.[8] In 2006, Q placed the song at number one on its list of the "500 Best Lost Tracks", writing: "If Standing on the Shoulder of Giants had contained this track, it would have probably got another star".[9] In the "Lock the Box" interview, Noel Gallagher also said that "Go Let It Out" stood "head and shoulders" above the other songs he had written at the time, and was "up there with some of the best things I've ever done".[5]

Release

"Go Let It Out" was released in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2000.[1][10] It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one.[11] In 2020, the single was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).[12]

Music video

The official music video for "Go Let It Out" was directed by Nick Egan.[13] Filmed in November 1999, it marked Gem Archer's first promotional appearance with the band after replacing Bonehead.[6] The video features Liam Gallagher singing on a double-decker bus before joining Noel, Gem and Alan White in performance footage. Reflecting Oasis's transitional line-up at the time, Liam is shown playing rhythm guitar, Noel plays bass, and Archer plays lead guitar.[14][15] In an April 2000 interview, the video's imagery was compared to Magical Mystery Tour, a comparison Liam Gallagher acknowledged while dismissing the video itself as "not as good as that".[16]
